Commercial Bay

Commercial Bay Bees

Commercial Bay has three thriving beehives situated atop the Albert Street Airbridge, each with 50,000 bees inside! Our bees were brought to us by Bees Up Top, who rescued our bees from Te-Atatu in 2019 as a swarm. Bees Up Top checks our hives once a month and delivers our honey at Christmas time.

Did you know?

Bees cannot survive in the wild anymore without the help of humans because of the nasty Varroa mite!

Each hive produces 7.5 kilograms of honey each year

City Bees produce 3 times more honey than suburban bees due to the abundance of flowers in the city like the established Pohutakawa trees and year round flowers in public parks

Bees travel up to 5 kilometres every day in search of food

Bees collect nectar and turn it into honey to feed their colony

Bees collect pollen and feed it to the baby bees. Plant sunflowers at your place and help save the bees

Bees like blue flowers the best because they are attracted to the colour blue. Plant blue Borage at your place and help save the bees

There is only one Queen bee and she is 3 times larger than worker bees.

All the bees in the hive are female. Males are only present spring when they need to mate with a virgin Queen. The females boot the males out in the winter time because they just like to chill in the hive!
